Infrared vs traditional
Infrared Sauna vs Traditional Sauna: How They Differ
Infrared and traditional (regular) saunas heat a room differently. We document infrared cabins only, so we explain the difference and leave the traditional numbers blank rather than invent them.

The difference in one picture
Radiant panels vs hot air
That much is a definition, not a measurement. The questions buyers actually ask — which feels hotter, which costs more to run, which lasts longer — need product data and ideally a side-by-side test. We have neither, so we leave those cells blank rather than fill them from experience.
Infrared cabin
Electric panels in the walls warm surfaces and people with radiant heat. Every cabin on this site is this type.
Traditional sauna
A stove heats rocks and the air around them; the air heats you. Not covered by our dataset.

Infrared cabin vs traditional sauna
Two rows are category definitions; every row that would need traditional-sauna product data says so instead of borrowing a number. What we can show is exactly what the infrared listings publish.
| Question | Infrared cabin | Traditional sauna |
|---|---|---|
| Heat source Category definition | Electric infrared panels inside the cabin | A stove heating rocks (wood, gas or electric) |
| What is heated Category definition | Surfaces and occupants by radiant heat | The air, then the occupant |
| Service and voltage | 23 of 61 cabins publish a voltage; 20 of those list 120V | Not in our verified dataset |
| Max temperature | 12 of 61 cabins publish a figure; the documented claims mention 122–150°F settings | Not in our verified dataset |
| Warm-up time | 9 of 61 cabins publish a figure, and most are series averages rather than model tests | Not in our verified dataset |
| Operating cost | No verified operating-cost data | Not in our verified dataset |
| Models we documented | 61 two-person cabins | 0 |

Questions that decide it for your home
Without a fair side-by-side, the useful comparison is your own house. These questions apply to either type; the infrared answers are on our other pages.
- What outlet or circuit can you give it? 23 of the 61 infrared cabins we checked publish a voltage, and 20 of those list 120V. For a traditional heater, get the requirement from its maker and an electrician.
- Where will it stand? Measure the room, the path in and the ceiling; infrared exterior sizes are on our fit page.
- How hot do you want it? Compare each maker’s stated maximum, and treat it as a claim rather than a measured temperature.
- What will it cost to run? We have no verified operating-cost data for infrared cabins, so ask the seller for the wattage and work it out from your electricity rate.
